Less a band, more a family

The Heavy Petals formed out of the Namaqualand flower festival, bonded through joy in each other's musicality, and launched by how much crowds love banging covers. We play some of the most popular songs in history, the ones that make people come alive.

We came together organically through the Namaqua open mic and grew through strong friendships. Today the band feels like a family, and when we arrive at rehearsals and gigs from our different walks of life, we make a unique kind of magic together.

“We all have day jobs, as you can sometimes tell.”

The petals

Jamie Day, vocals

Jamie Day

Vocals

Freddie had Queen. We have Jamie: a low, rare tone and volumes of natural talent.

More about Jamie

Queen had Freddie Mercury, the Rolling Stones had Mick Jagger, and the Heavy Petals have Jamie Day. Jamie is sensational: a unique tone, a lower range for a female vocalist and volumes of natural talent. As she's grown in confidence she's become a huge vibe on stage. Now you'll find her fist-pumping to Levels, getting the crowd on a rocket to the moon. Then again, she's known to deliver a poignant, heart-tugging message. Watch out for those!

Rob Shaff, keys

Rob Shaff

Keys

Works out any melody by ear. Threatening to play 100 songs on demand one day.

More about Rob

Rob Shaff, the band's keys player, is probably the most talented untrained musician you'll ever meet. He can work out any melody by ear and could probably play 100 songs on demand. He's threatening to do it one day. He may be made of stone, but he has the heart of a teddy bear and deep wells of gees.

Steve Kimmel, bass · vocals

Steve Kimmel

Bass · vocals

Musical savant, hardest stank face in the business, and a meteoric vocal star.

More about Steve

Kimmel is the bassist and a musical savant. A trained guitarist from a young age, he's now a grooving bassist with the hardest stank face out there. He has a pure love of music: he can fall into a trance on a single note when the band is on song, then make his guitar heroes proud by ripping a Mayer tribute or the famous Sweet Child solo. Kimmel has also had a meteoric rise as a vocal star; his flawless ear leads him into beautiful melody lines.

Nicky Anderson, drums · harmonies

Nicky Anderson

Drums · harmonies

Harmony king who finds the 3rd or 5th in any riff, and leads rehearsals from behind the kit.

More about Nicky

Nicky is not a trained drummer, yet he's superlative at the kit and able to emulate the most nuanced drum parts in the covers the band plays. He's also a vocal harmony king who can find the 3rd or 5th in any riff! Despite playing a rhythm instrument, Nicky conducts and leads many songs musically at rehearsal.

Peza, lead guitar · vocals

Peza

Lead guitar · vocals

Drummer turned Frusciante disciple. Now allowed a mic, mostly for crowd chuckles.

More about Peza

Peza grew up playing drums but is now exploring the new frontier of melody as the band's lead guitarist. He lives for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and John Frusciante specifically; hopefully you can hear that in his playing. Thanks to some singing lessons in 2025 he's allowed a mic in front of him now, and is sometimes able to make the crowd chuckle and amp them up.
